The distinguished Briton with German roots, Rick Stein
Christopher Richard “Rick” Stein, OBE, is a British chef, restaurateur, television chef, and author of non-fiction books. He runs several restaurants and hotels in England and Australia with his business partner and former wife, Jill Stein.

Richard Stein was born on a farm in Oxfordshire in 1947. In his youth, he studied at a vocational school for the restaurant business and later worked on a German cargo ship and for the Australian railways, among other jobs, before graduating from New College, Oxford, with a degree in English.
After Richard Stein inherited £15,000 from his German great-uncle, he and a friend opened a nightclub on the harbour in Padstow, but soon lost their license and were forced to close. He still had a license to run a restaurant in the neighboring premises of the former club. In 1975, he and his wife Jill converted it into a bistro specializing in fish and seafood, called The Seafood Restaurant. By 2022, the chain had grown to six restaurants, bistros, and cafes in Cornwall and four in the rest of England. In addition, there are hotels, a cooking school, gift shops, and delicatessens. Family
Stein is of German descent on his father’s side. His great-grandfather, Julius Otto Stein (1847–1898), was the younger brother of German entrepreneur August Stein. Richard Stein’s father, Eric Stein, was the managing director of the Scottish conglomerate Distillers Company. Shortly after taking early retirement, when Richard Stein was 18, he committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. Stein met his first wife, Jill Newstead, in Padstow. They married in 1975 and became business partners. Together they have three sons: Edward, Jack, and Charles, who are all involved in the family business. In 1997, Stein met Sarah Burns in Australia while she was working as advertising director for Australia Gourmet Traveler magazine. Their affair lasted five years before Jill found out and divorced Rick in 2007. Jill and Richard Stein remained business partners. “Sass” were married on October 7, 2011.
